Our English Language Arts Department is dedicated to developing strong readers, writers, speakers, and critical thinkers. Through the study of literature, informational texts, writing, language, and communication, students learn to express themselves effectively and engage thoughtfully with the world around them. Our curriculum promotes literacy, creativity, analysis, and academic excellence while helping students build the communication skills necessary for success in college, careers, and civic life. Through culturally relevant texts, collaborative discussions, and authentic writing experiences, students develop a lifelong appreciation for language and learning.

Course description
Literacy is the foundation of academic achievement and lifelong learning. Our English Language Arts curriculum is designed to strengthen students' abilities to read, write, listen, speak, and think critically across a variety of disciplines and real-world contexts.
Aligned with state and national standards, our courses emphasize reading comprehension, vocabulary development, literary analysis, research skills, and effective communication. Students engage with diverse texts that expand their knowledge, encourage inquiry, and develop empathy for different perspectives. Through structured writing instruction and meaningful discussions, students learn to communicate ideas clearly and confidently.
Our goal is to cultivate independent readers, effective communicators, and analytical thinkers who are prepared for advanced academic study, professional environments, and responsible citizenship.
K–1ST GRADE ELA TOPICS
Our Kindergarten and First Grade English Language Arts curriculum establishes foundational literacy skills that support future academic success. Students develop phonemic awareness, letter recognition, vocabulary, listening comprehension, and early reading fluency through engaging and interactive learning experiences.
Students learn foundational reading skills, including phonics, decoding, sight-word recognition, and basic comprehension strategies. Writing instruction focuses on handwriting, sentence formation, storytelling, and expressing ideas through words and illustrations.
Through read-alouds, discussions, and literacy activities, students build confidence in their ability to communicate, read independently, and develop a love for books and learning.


2ND–3RD GRADE ELA TOPICS
Our Second and Third Grade English Language Arts curriculum expands students' reading and writing abilities while strengthening comprehension, vocabulary, and communication skills. Students become more independent readers and writers as they engage with increasingly complex texts.
Students develop fluency, reading comprehension, and literary understanding through fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and informational texts. Writing instruction includes narrative, opinion, and informative writing, helping students organize and communicate their ideas effectively.
Additional areas of study include grammar, sentence structure, research skills, and oral communication. Through collaborative discussions and literacy projects, students build the confidence needed to become successful lifelong learners.
4TH–5TH GRADE ELA TOPICS
Our Fourth and Fifth Grade English Language Arts curriculum deepens students' analytical thinking and communication skills through a balanced study of literature, informational texts, and writing. Students learn to interpret texts, evaluate information, and support their ideas with evidence.
Students engage in reading comprehension activities that emphasize theme, character development, author's purpose, and text structure. Writing instruction focuses on narrative, argumentative, and expository compositions while strengthening organization, grammar, and revision skills.
Students also develop research and presentation abilities through projects that encourage inquiry, collaboration, and critical thinking. These experiences prepare students for the increased literacy demands of middle school.


6TH–8TH GRADE ELA TOPICS
Our Sixth through Eighth Grade English Language Arts curriculum emphasizes critical reading, analytical writing, and effective communication. Students engage with diverse literary and informational texts while developing advanced comprehension and interpretation skills.
Students examine themes, literary devices, author's craft, and textual evidence while strengthening their ability to analyze and evaluate information. Writing instruction focuses on argumentative essays, literary analysis, research papers, and informative writing.
Additional topics include vocabulary development, grammar, public speaking, media literacy, and collaborative discussion. By the end of middle school, students possess the literacy skills necessary for success in rigorous high school coursework.

ENGLISH I
English I introduces students to high school-level reading, writing, and communication skills. Students engage with a variety of literary and informational texts while developing critical thinking and analytical abilities.
The course emphasizes reading comprehension, literary analysis, vocabulary development, and effective writing strategies. Students explore narrative, expository, and argumentative writing while learning to support their ideas with evidence from texts.
Through discussions, presentations, and writing assignments, students strengthen their communication skills and establish a foundation for future English coursework.

ENGLISH II
English II builds upon the literacy skills developed in English I while emphasizing analytical reading, academic writing, and critical interpretation of texts. Students explore literature from multiple cultures, historical periods, and perspectives.
Students examine literary themes, rhetorical strategies, and author techniques while developing more sophisticated writing skills. Instruction focuses on literary analysis, research, argumentation, and evidence-based writing.
By engaging with increasingly complex texts and writing tasks, students strengthen the skills needed for upper-level English courses and college readiness.
ENGLISH III (AMERICAN LITERATURE)
English III explores the development of American literature and its relationship to history, culture, and society. Students examine significant literary works while analyzing themes, perspectives, and historical influences.
Students engage in close reading, literary analysis, research, and argumentative writing. The course emphasizes critical thinking, textual evidence, and effective communication through essays, presentations, and discussions.
Through the study of American voices and experiences, students develop a deeper understanding of literature's role in shaping national identity and social change.


ENGLISH IV
(WORLD LITERATURE & COLLEGE WRITING)
English IV prepares students for college, careers, and lifelong learning through advanced reading, writing, and communication experiences. Students engage with world literature while exploring universal themes and diverse cultural perspectives.
The course emphasizes advanced literary analysis, research writing, argumentative composition, and professional communication. Students develop the skills necessary for college-level coursework, including independent research, critical evaluation of sources, and formal presentations.
Through rigorous academic experiences, students graduate with the literacy, communication, and analytical skills necessary for success in higher education, the workforce, and civic engagement.
