Social Studies Dept

Our Social Studies department is dedicated to equipping students with essential knowledge and critical thinking skills to navigate today's complex society. We understand the importance of providing historical context to help students understand the world they live in. Our curriculum is designed with the recognition that our students will be part of a global economic system that values individuals with a comprehensive understanding of its evolution.

As our student body represents various regions across the country, we face the challenge of aligning our social studies teaching with state-specific standards. To address this, we have adopted the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) standards as the foundation of our curriculum. Our curriculum focuses on themes such as geography, climate, societal development and structure, culture, art, governance, civic ideals and practices, individuals and institutions, science and technology, global connections, and contributions. By exploring these topics, our students develop a deep understanding of diverse regions and their impact on society.

Through our Social Studies program, we aim to foster critical thinking, global awareness, and a sense of civic responsibility in our students. We believe that by providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the world's history and its current complexities, we empower them to make informed decisions for themselves and society at large.

Course description

Our social studies curriculum is designed to empower Black students by providing them with essential knowledge and critical thinking skills to make informed decisions for themselves and society. We recognize the need to expose students to key historical information that helps them understand the complex nature of today's society. Our curriculum was developed with the understanding that our students must compete in a global economic system that values individuals who comprehend its evolution.

Since we serve students from various regions across the country, it is challenging to align our social studies teaching with each state's specific standards. Instead, we have chosen an approach aligned with the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) standards. Our curriculum's theme revolves around analyzing regions based on geography, climate, societal development and structure, people, culture, art, power, authority, governance, civic ideals and practices, individuals, groups, and institutions, science, technology, architecture, production, distribution, consumption, global connections, and contributions.

By adopting this comprehensive approach, we aim to equip our Black students with a deep understanding of the world around them, enabling them to critically analyze their surroundings, historical contexts, and global interconnections. Through the study of various social science disciplines, our curriculum fosters a well-rounded education that prepares our students for success in an ever-changing and interconnected world.

Assignments

students will receive their assignments through Google Classroom. It is essential for students to show all their work and provide detailed explanations of their problem-solving process. Assignments may incorporate exercises from the IXL platform to offer extra practice and reinforce key concepts. Students are expected to complete assignments on time and are responsible for checking with the teacher or their classmates for any missed work or notes in case of an absence. If there are exceptional circumstances that lead to late submission, parents should reach out via email. Late assignments will be accepted within the unit timeframe, and if the unit has already been completed, it will be at the teacher's discretion to decide whether to accept the assignment.
